Georgia Southern University provides a number of resources to the community. It is the home of the Magnolia Gardens and GSU Botanical Gardens. The Georgia Southern University Eagle Sanctuary and Lamar Q. Ball, Jr. Raptor Center, a sanctuary for bald eagles and other native birds of prey, and an ecological education center are under development.
According to 2000 Census, the City of Statesboro had a population of 22,698 persons. Between 1990 and 2000, the city experienced a population increase of 9.3%, compared to the state growth during this period of 26.4%.
